The 1911 Rochester Baking set, an 18-card Philadelphia Athletics
set, is among the scarcest of early 20th Century bakery issues.
The set commemorates the Athletics' 1910 Championship season,
and, except for pitcher Jack Coombs, the checklist includes
nearly all key members of the club, including manager Connie
Mack. The cards are the standard size for the era, 1-1/2"
X 2-5/8". The front of each card features a player portrait
set against a colored background. The player's name and the
word "Athletics" appear at the bottom, while "World's
Champions 1910" is printed along the top. The backs of
the cards adverise the set as the "Athletics Series".
Collectors should be aware that the same checklist was used
for a similar Athletics set issued by the Williams Baking and
Cullivan's Firesdie Tobacco (T208), and also that blank-backed
versions are known to exist, but these are classified ast E104
cards in the American Card Catalog.
This example has some flaws - wrinkles and light creasing -
but still has a nice look overall. Back is fairly clean too.
