Joe Medwick
(b. November 24, 1911 - d. March 21, 1975)
Joe Medwick provided the power to light up the 1930s Cardinals "Gashouse Gang." He led the NL in RBI three consecutive years and in hits twice. In 1937, "Ducky" (a nickname he loathed) batted .374 with 31 homers and 154 RBI to capture the Triple Crown. "Muscles" was a brawler who had a career .324 average, 1,383 RBI, and 540 doubles. In the 1934 World Series against Detroit, his hard slide into third earned him the wrath of the Tiger fans, who pelted him with garbage until Commisioner Landis ordered him from the field for his own safety.

Comments: This story is one of my favorites in the collection. The first portrait to occupy this position was a tribute card - a 1977 Shakey's Pizza card. It was a nice image which I purchased as part of a lot in July, 2000. I bought some more Shakey's in November, 2002. In January 2003, I replaced the tribute Medwick with an issue contemporary to his career - a 1936 World Wide Gum example. I picked up another copy in July, 2004. One of these was submitted to PSA and graded VG 3. I already had some other '36 WWG cards and decided to replace the Medwick with a new type card.

The 1937 Dixie Lid issue caught my eye and the next leg of the adventure started. I picked up one in April 2007 and continued purchasing additional examples when the reverse or back advertisement was different. I thought it would be fun to have a little subset to the primary HOF collection by accumulating as many different Dixie Medwicks as I could possibly find. More than 15 years into the quest, I'm at 45 different variations. This timeline helps explain the full progress:
